"There's a tornado!" How to Punctuate Dialogue

Improperly punctuated dialogue is the most common technical mistake I see in the works I critique. There's something about those "quote" marks that sometimes throws people for a loop, so I decided to write a guide explaining how and why dialogue is punctuated the way it is. Most punctuation problems happen when the dialogue is part of a larger sentence, so let's start there. These three sentences are correctly punctuated: Cherise hopped into the kitchen. "I love unicorns," she said, and poured a box of rainbow fruity sugar-os into a pie tin. Her little brother, James, climbed onto a chair and stared at the tin. "Is that pie?" he asked. He loved pie. The backdoor slammed and Dad ran inside. "There's a tornado!" he yelled. No one loved tornadoes. Here are some common ways I see sentences incorrectly punctuated: "Tornadoes are scary." said Cherise. The Hermit, created by me in NightCafe Twenty years had passed in the wilderness of sand and ruins beyond the Nile's reach. Twenty years had the hermit guarded the caves; twenty years he had watched, with some boredom, the tegmu ball balancing atop its pinnacle within the shadowed, ancient hall of the ruined sepulcher. He was awakened from his doze by a shifting stream of sand and a clatter. The tegmu fell and rolled across the floor. The hermit lifted his head and stopped the ball with one stiff, aged paw. They were coming! He bolted upright. His vigil was over. He took the tegmu and leapt across the courtyard like a cat fifteen years his junior. They were coming! Already the sand had begun to pour from the sides of the temple as the mechanism buried deep below its stones shuddered to life. The hermit placed the glowing tegmu in a slot in the wall and the ball rolled away, down a series of tubes beneath the dunes. His life's work had finished--or had it just begun? He...

Escher's famous lithograph of the impossible Penrose staircase, Ascending and Descending . I'm a big fan of Escher's visual paradoxes and the way he plays with architectural spaces. The abandoned ruin that Zahara finds in chapter 28 is a place where space (and time) bends back on itself. Zahara's paths do not end where they appear to; you cannot walk a straight line through the ruins. Musical theme for this chapter: The lullaby Zahara sings to herself is Lala Salama. It's a Swahili lullaby from Tanzania (Nazeem is originally from what-is-now Tanzania, and his mother used to sing it to him before she died.) Zahara spins thread (or forgets to) with a drop spindle.
